Describe your hopes, dreams and fears for internship consider your job description, your project, your coworkers, your internship site, your overall experience and how it could fit into your education, your life or your family.

Adrian Duran / 2025
My hope for this internship is to learn how to be in a workplace and how to adapt better to an actual workplace I've never worked at a job and this internship will hopefully teach me more about how to do that. My dreams are like my hopes on where I want to get my mindset more into a workplace and be in a more professional workplace. My fear for this internship is not being liked by the students or any adult in the school it's more just in my head but that's my only fear. My project is gonna be based on the kids being kind and being good to each other I've heard they had big issues with that due to them being together for so long & such a big class 32 KIDS!!. My coworkers are amazing my coworker is my mentor aka the teacher I don't communicate much with others. My experience is great so far not much to talk about in this part. It fits in my education by learning more about how to communicate with people of any age just in case it is needed for the future it's always a good thing to have. Also, it just fits into my life and family by having a lot of young people in my life and this can maybe help me understand them better since I am one of the oldest of my family.

Describe the culture at your internship, including how people interact, communicate and work together. Post an image that captures that culture.

Adrian Duran / 2025
The culture at my Internship if very amazing it is a lot like my culture this has to do with mostly everyone in the school community being a part of LatinX which is the same as mine so I can relate a lot to this community. Mostly everyone at this school speaks Spanish or is learning Spanish due to the school being a dual language school. The people I interact with are my mentor and the students in the class I would say my mentor interacts very kindly and has a lot of patience. Meanwhile, the students are very kind as well but as their person because all of them mixed is like boiling water. Everyone communicates either in Spanish or English so everyone has their way of communicating with one another. Everyone in the school works together amazingly everyone has such a creative mind which makes everything shine. One big thing about every culture in this community is sports everyone in the school especially the students loves the sport of soccer and I think that it fully captures everyone's culture they have an amazing soccer field.
The amazing soccer field the students have which is always being played!

What are you most surprised by during your first week of internship and why? Post an image that shows what surprises you.

I have had multiple surprises so far from this school but my biggest surprise from this school has to be them having a garden class and having their garden. With vegetables, fruits, etc they also have their compost where the students their self-help with the compost like the picture shown. I don't know why this surprised me like it did maybe because when I used to go to school they had a small garden but it wasn't like this one. I also didn't know elementary schools did like this still and I think it's awesome for the kids to have something like this because it's enjoyable. I was mostly surprised by the fact that schools still do this, they had vegetables like kale, radishes, and even bananas which was very cool. I also like the fact that the kids help a lot with the garden and it's not just the adults doing it the whole time the students are hands-on with it as well. I don't personally remember having a compost or being super hands-on with the garden when I was in 5th grade

Describe your internship project. What will you be doing? What will the final product look like? Which skills (academic, creative, technical) will you utilize and/or develop as you do the project. How will the project benefit the organization?

Adrian Duran / 2025
My internship project Is gonna be about kindness and affirmations with them having a nice project to do with it. I will be teaching the students how to be Kind and teach them about affirmations to each other and themselves. I chose this because the students go for each other's throats a lot because they've been together since 1st grade and all of them together cause an explosion. There are times were they are not kind to each other or just do not treat each other the best. I also think it was the best opportunity because the next week is kidneys week which is pretty much a spirit week but renamed so it was the perfect opportunity. The final product will be a full set of slides explaining kindness and affirmations also will have 2 projects for the kids to do kindness chains & kindness rocks. They will all be making one I will be hanging up the chains and the rocks will be outside for the whole school to school. I mostly utilized the creative side of this project. This benefits the organization by helping the students understand better of being kind to one another and it also benefits the way the school looks, making it more beautiful.

What is the biggest challenge you face at your internship? How do you see yourself growing or changing over the course of your internship?

My biggest challenge so far with my internship is dealing with so many 5th graders Don't get me wrong the 5th graders are amazing and cool. All of them together just go crazy and have a lot of energy they also have problems listening to the teacher because they like talking. This is a big challenge because it gives me a headache here and there and also just them not listening can cause issues with my project. I also see myself changing and growing throughout this internship it's giving me more patience for younger people and it's making me understand them more. They seem to all have different ways of thinking and understanding and it's really interesting but it also helps me learn more. Everyone, so far I've communicated with has helped me learn something new even if they don't even know it.

Third Prompts

You are probably more than half-way through your project. How is it going? What challenges have you faced? What have you learned? What are you doing to ensure a successful completion of your internship project.

My project is going amazing so far I've finished the slides and talked to my mentor about how and when I'm gonna present my slides to the class and I'll be doing it on Jan 28th very excited! My mentor got me all the materials needed to make the kindest chains and kindness rocks. The challenge I have faced is trying to make the slides look nice and presentable I did manage to overcome that and I think it came out great. I have learned the best way to get to the students and the best way they can learn, hands-on projects seem to work best for them. I'm gonna ensure a successful completion by getting everything I need done and making sure I double-check everything and have everything locked in my head. Also, been talking to my mentor a lot about how to go about this which is also helping me and leading me in a good way!

Who benefits from the work that you do at internship? How and/or why?

The people who benefit from what I do for internship Are first the students they have another person to learn from and if needed I am there to help them. I help them with all their questions, especially in math I get a small group of students and help them through the math problems. Who also benefits from my help is my mentor and the other teachers in the school my mentor benefits because again. They have another person to help them out which makes it easier to get stuff done, she also gives me work to do like grading or setting up projects. It gives her more time to focus on more important things when I can be doing the grading and still helping out. The other people in the school like the other teachers, the Principal, etc benefit as well because If I'm helping the class I'm helping make their job easier. For example, if some of the students in my class are messing around they don't need to tell them anything because I am there to help get them in line and they can focus on their things.

What is going well with your project? What challenges are you facing?

My project is going amazing so far my project will span over 3 days I already got over the first part which was presenting what the project will be and getting them started with the first things. They started with writing the affirmations on the paper for kindness chains and decorating it nicely. Today as of writing this we will get started with chaining them the students are in rows so they will be grouped up by rows. I so far see a positive outcome from doing this the students seem to enjoy it and are excited to keep going. The challenge I'm facing is speaking I seem to stutter a lot and fumble with my words luckily it hasn't been horrible but still a challenge. Other then that problem it seems to be going nicely the students seem very happy with the project and seem to be enjoying themselves.

What advice would you give to a junior in high school who wants to pursue a career in the field of your internship?

The advice I would give a junior in high school that wants to purse my internship field is to have a lot of patience and understanding for students. It's definitely a challenge to be in a class with 5th graders they have a lot of energy and can be a lot to handle but if you have patience it'll be good. It varies from classroom to classroom but in my personal experience there was struggles that I had to deal with. The students can have problems listening, paying attention, talking, and etc it was a really big struggle and it's a lot because there are 32 students. Non then less I really enjoyed my time here and I think the struggles where there to make me better and teach me how to better myself. I also would say to pursue a career here its a big struggle and long process to want to be in this field of work it takes a lot of time to be in this.

Describe what you are most thankful for in your internship experience—what experiences, what people, and so on? What new appreciations have you gained through internship and how did you develop these?

I am thankful for the opportunity to work with my mentor and the students during this internship. This experience has been truly amazing, and I’ve enjoyed it more than I could have imagined. I loved every moment of talking to the students, helping them out, and acting as a second teacher. It was so amazing to be a part of their learning journey and see their growth. My mentor and the students were all incredibly cool and creative each with their own cool personalities that I learned so much from. It was awesome to learn from them whether that meant experiencing life as a 5th grader or doing 5th-grade work. I also learned how to be a  “baddie” Yeah I don't know but it really helped me connect with the students in an authentic way. While there were tough moments, the overall experience was one of growth and self-discovery. I gained an appreciation for the importance of time management and working efficiently to meet deadlines. I also came to recognize how much I value the school as a whole. The community, the environment, and the culture made it an amazing place to learn and contribute. I am so grateful for everyone who made this internship what it was it truly taught me lessons that I will carry with me moving forward.

What advice would you pass on to future interns? What are the most important skills for a student to be successful at his/her internship? How could another student develop these skills prior to beginning an internship?

The advice I would pass on to future interns is to be Chill and not procrastinate as much as I did for the work that needs to be done don't make the same mistake because it all adds up. An important skill to have to be successful in an internship is good communication no matter where you intern. Communication with your mentor especially is essential for a good grade in an internship and to be successful without that I would most likely fail. Also, another skill would be patience I think especially if you're gonna intern at a school where you have to deal with younger people. From my personal experience, it gets overwhelming and sometimes it will get you frustrated, to be honest, but if you're just patient it'll all be fine. A student can develop these skills by just getting out of their comfort zone if you're not talkative then start talking to people this will help a lot. The BIGGEST piece of advice I can give someone who wants to be successful in their internship is to just be cool and calm it might seem like a lot. Honestly, it isn't overall it'll most likely just be a good experience and to not be so hard on it everything will be fine and as long as you put in the work you will do good!

The image above was on the first week of interning here. This was a march for Martin Luther King that was being held at Knox Middle School. I've never been in a march or rally whatever you'd wanna call it but it was pretty cool we marched around the neighborhood around Knox Middle School. Before the march, Knox Middle School had a pretty cool thing there was singing, dancing, poetry, etc showing all the cultures. We had classical dances that are mostly performed in Latin cultures and we also had MLK speech. It was so many cultures all together with multiple schools there and it was just amazing I think the whole experience was pretty cool. The students also seemed to enjoy their time and had fun marching and we even made our posters about MLK. I got to contribute to the poster-making and coloring the poster. That whole week for MLK was pretty amazing and I would do it again!

This is the most important picture In my photo essay This is the notes that were given to me the last day of me at my internship. These were given to me by students and it really just warmed by heart it showed that they really did care & like me there. These really meant a lot to me because to me this shows that I did. impact to them and they even said they'll miss me being there. I just really wanted to use this part to just say that I really enjoyed, my stayed with them and I wish I could stay more them there. I'd rather be there dealing with them being loud and sometimes chaotic then go back to boring school. I really liked my internship and at first I was saying to myself that I wouldn't care about internship and that it'll mean nothing pretty much just not caring about it. Till now I really liked it and just times like this were I get heartwarming messages from the people there just hits me a bit either way I loved Internship!
